Uzbekistan
Active Muslim-secular internal conflict.
A conflict between the Muslim mujahedin and the authoritarian secular government and its corruption and Soviet-style secular suppression of religion, since 1999. The conflict is influenced by a moribund economy, inequality and poor government. The fighters joined the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001, returning from 2004 and carrying out suicide bombings, gunfights and opposition to US military bases, especially in the populous Ferghana valley. Violence in Andijan in May 2005 after the death of demonstrators protesting against the government. Widespread poverty and injustice in Uzbekistan, with much privilege for the few. The Muslim side has mixed motives: local concerns mixed with radical international Wahhabi Muslim geopolitical influences (re: Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Xinjiang, China.
