India – Tribal Conflicts
Ongoing localised conflicts - mainly tribal peoples defending their beliefs or land rights.
Tribal rebellions and protests have continued for two centuries, mainly over encroachment and squatting by non-tribals, loss of land-rights and official corruption. Also there have been conflicts over fundamental beliefs and holy places between tribespeople and Hindus or Muslims.
Tribal peoples (adivasi) number 68m (8% of population), in 573 communities, mainly in hill and forest areas, often possessing their own local cults or faiths and subject to pressures from mainstream Hindus and Muslims. Most tribals are of original Dravidian stock, suffering caste-related discrimination. Conflicts tend to be small-scale and local, though consistent throughout time.
